Re: Fotos Astrochelys radiata
Finally it worked!
As you may seen, I adjusted the photos to the window.
All of your radiatas are incredibly beautiful. The first one is very yelloish/white and radiated. What a wonderful tortoise. I am sure you are wondering how that tortoise will become, when mature.
How is your group formed? (male/female ratio)
Having more males than females helps a lot to motive male to have sex.
Moreover, as females do avoid male's penis, it could be helpfull to have a sandy area, where the female cannot avoid penetration
It is rude to say...
__________________________________________________________________
: lol:

Astrochelys radiata
Hallo Wolfen
My radiatas are normaly living outside from the begin of april until the 2. week of september. In the paddock, they can change between a hothouse ( la serre ) with technics and a hotbed ( germ.: Frühbeet / I don`t know the french word ) without technics.
In the paddock is a little door, so when the weather is super, I open this door and the radiatas can use my complete garden.
At first they begin to eat my grass-plot.
In the beginning I have put many plants in the paddock, like la lavande, le romarin, etc. but the big radiatas damaged all plants. Today is only grass and a big hibiskus-tree ( I have not found the english and the french word ) in the paddock.
Now some fotos:

Thanks for the photos Ulli
Hibiscus is the same word in French. Hibiscus trees are also called Althea.
In my backyard, I also have American water hibiscus (Hibiscus moscheutos, also known as Rosa mallow) and other cultivars (hybrids). They are VERY hardy (-15°)
Those hibiscus are more like Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (the tropical ones, which are common in HOT countries, and is from China) which is not Hardy at all.
Look at the flowers:

Hello Phoenix
I also have Hibiskus althes and I know the Hibiskus from China. But I have never seen before the water-Hibiskus. Very nice.
Do the tortoises eat the blossoms of the water-Hibiskus?
Salut, Ulli

Astrochelys radiata
Hallo Wolfen
In autumn and winter my radiatas are living indoor in my house, not outside in the hothouse.
I have indoor the following technic:
1) 1 x 150 Watt, HQI-Spot, called "MX 150",
2) 1 x 70 Watt, Lucky Reptile Bright Sun, 70 Watt Spot,
3) at different times 100 Watt or 160 Watt, Mega-Ray or JBL UV Sun or Exo-Terra Solar Glo,
4) a little heat-carpet, and
5) for 10 minutes every day a 300 Watt Osram Ultra Vitalux.

Re: Fotos Astrochelys radiata
you use heating carpets for your tortoises? Usually they are seen as unsuitable (for degestive matters)
where do you buy MegaRay? Directly ordering in the USA?
Are Lucky Reptile spots efficient? They are SO expensive... because you have a lot of stuff to buy...

MX 150 and other lamps
Hallo Wolfen, hallo Phoenix
I use only a little heat-carpet ( 40 x 50 cm ) early in the morning for 2 hours. Not more.
I think, the Lucky Reptile Bright Sun are very good, also for my Kleinmannis. I can buy one Bright Sun for
35,- € ( 50 Watt + 70 Watt ). The 150 Watt Bright Sun ist more expencive.
We can buy the Mega Ray from www.terra-solutions.de
But they are expencive, I thing.
But I have heard, that Mega Ray, T-Rex UV Heat and the new JBL UV are all from the same producer in Canada.
Here a link for the MX 150 HQI-lamp. It is the biggest and the best HQI-lamp I know:

Hothouse
Hallo Wolfen
Than you need a very expencive hothouse like this:
http://www.beckmann-kg.de/websale7/Typ-Plantarium.htm?Ctx=%7bver%2f7%2fver%7d%7bst%2f3ea%2fst%7d%7bcmd%2f0%2fcmd%7d%7bm%2fwebsale%2fm%7d%7bs%2fbeckmann%2fs%7d%7bl%2f01%2daa%2fl%7d%7bmi%2f209976%2fmi%7d%7bp1%2fada0d938e0f81888865f5233da1f5b82%2fp1%7d%7bmd5%2fd0134cd256347d74a4b131c0bf8050d2%2fmd5%7d
Where ist your localisation? I`am sorry, but I don`t know "RP".
I think, North-Germany ist to cold in winter, to keep Radiatas outside in a hothouse.
Salut, Ulli

RP ---> Paris suburbs
You can have radiata outside but you have to heat a greenhouse.
Greenhouses can be heated by various methods but it could be very expensive during long and cold winters. Specially if you use fuel to heat it. Electric solutions are often better
However, you must be sure that the heating system is secure. Because if the system stops heating the greenhouse during december or January, it could be lethal for the tortoises.
I have to say that breeding outside is a amazing solution because tortoise can take daylight as well as natural UV light during the whole year. And even if it is cold, tortoises can go outside during warm and hot days of winter, when the temperature can reach 20°c

Re: Fotos Astrochelys radiata
I have an idea to use a heat pump (inverter). This heat pump can be coupled with a heating fan.
